Newbie Question: Failed named.conf file edit?!

What do the log messages say?  They should say what the problem is and 
what line of the file it doesn't like.

Did you try using the named-checkconf command?  That's what it's for, 
right?

It's perfectly fine to edit the file while the server is running.  It 
only accesses the file at startup and when you tell it to reload its 
configuration with rndc.
