1) They are not new, they were standardized in RFC 2133, almost NINE
YEARS ago.

2) They are not IPv6 calls but multi-protocol calls (they work with
IPv4, too).

I would suggest to consider upgrading the library. dig is not the only
program which assumes that getaddrinfo() exists.
