rndc stats on SLES 10 (BIND 9.3.2)

'rndc stats' should not display any output. The behavior you're  
seeing is normal.

On the other hand, 'rndc status' (note the extra 'u') gives a short  
status report to stdout (your screen or shell window), but does not  
write anything to disk.
