That's distinctly misleading as stated. The proper quote from RFC 2181
would be "A full domain name is limited to 255 octets (including the 
separators)". That is equivalent to a maximum length of 253 characters if
you are expressing the name in the usual form "name.domain.example.test",
or 254 if you add the terminal dot, "name.domain.example.test.".

Even those numbers, and the 63 for the length of a component, need to
be reconsidered if the "characters" in your input names are going to be
processed as IDNs (RFC 3490 et seq).
