Another is simply to have a country selection mechanism on the front

If part of the reason for your wish is language selection, this is
actually much better, because where a person is bears no necessary
relationship to the language they prefer.

Is the content on your websites different? If so, my preference as a
user is a manual selection - if I want to see what's on your American
site, and you keep dumping me on some other page because *you* think I
should be visiting (say) the Australian site, I will be annoyed.

So don't forget the lo-tech solutions...
