That's only useful if the domain is already delegated to the server you 
want to check.  I got the impression that he needs to test the server 
BEFORE the delegation is implemented (because the registrar won't accept 
the NS records if the server isn't operational).

Also, dig +trace seems to pick a server to query at random.  Since there 
are usually multiple delegation records for a zone, there's no guarantee 
that dig +trace will query the server you want to test.

Since dig @<server> does exactly what he wants, what would be the point 
of dig +trace?
