I agree dig is better for serious debugging, but for a quick check host
isn't as bad as you suggest.

$ host has address has IPv6 address 2001:ba8:1e3:: mail is handled by 1
$ host
Host not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
$ host
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
