domain if it has been delegated authority for that domain.  In other
words, the last time the resolver queried for a name server for that
domain, it got back "NS" records that named that remote name server as
the authoritative name server.  How did it get delegated this
authority?  By its parent domain's name server, of course, who got it
from its parent, all the way back to the root name servers.

Note that there are a couple of possibilities for inconsistencies here.
(1) The parent domain's name servers may not all agree who the name
servers are for this domain.  (2) The parent domain's list of name
servers may not agree with the domain's own list of its own name
servers.  (3) Either of these may not agree with reality.
