*hierarchical* fashion, wherein if the nameserver has explicit knowledge about a particular zone, it will disable forwarding for all names below that point in the hierarchy. In BIND, you can accomplish the same effect by specifying "forwarders { }" in your zone definitions (except for "type forward" zone definitions, of course), so BIND's capabilities in this area are a superset of MS-DNS'es. - Kevin
