You'll want to run tools like Wireshark on the client, and tcpdump on the DNS 
server (both filtering for port 53, primarily UDP). Those tools are compatible 
with each other, through the PCAP format (network traces). As such, each can 
give you an idea as to what's happening on the wire. Their primary differences 
are really just in that one prefers graphical environments (acknowledging 
tshark), while the other prefers a textual environment.
