I keep both just because I have this habbit of doing things the way I was originally taught.  I find it easy enough to just make my changes in named.boot and run named-bootconf to convert it to named.conf.  However, if you have a huge named.boot, you may want to start editing named.conf to save some time.  But the answer to your question is Yes, it is safe to delete named.boot.  BIND 8 does not ever use this file to my knowledge.

could someone please explain to me the difference between named.boot and named.conf
it seems as though these files could server the same purpose.. but why two?
is it save to delete named.boot if you are using named.conf?
