It isn't in the tarballs, but if you pull the source from our git
repository, you can see some documentation in doc/dev and doc/design
that may be helpful. It isn't very thorough, though.

Normally I'd also recommend https://www.isc.org/git, but the website
is offline for maintenance at the moment. You could try archive.org.
