    Catch any uncaught exceptions in our main loop, and exit the main loop
    if we get them.
    We use this feature to handle the new test case, which is when our
    stdout goes away.

    Catch SIGHUP and a few other fatal signals and shutdown cleanly.
    Also adds tests for signal handling (which required a bit of
    refactoring of the boss process).
