I usually configure with prefix in my home, so I didn't learn to use the
scripts. I use something like:
./configure --prefix=/home/vorner/testing/bind10
[ Some work here ]
rm ~/testing/bind10 -rf
make install

That way I always get clean install and it is not so slow (install is definitely
faster than compilation).

But I agree, it is probably more convenient to just run in from the source
directory.
