Logging tends to be used for historical/trending/stats, for debugging
and for security & audit requirements.

The format is not critical as long as we document it & it's reasonably
machine parseable. Customizable logs are cool but bells & whistles
mostly.

While we can say that most folks use logs because that's the tools they
have, I think that it's also because logs have proven to be a reasonable
way to deal with these 3 requirements. It doesn't have to be syslog but
something not too disimilar will sure make the transition easier for
folks who already have working monitoring and stats systems.
