Well, I guess the branch was just older than the function parameter. It was not
needed before because a bug caused non-blocking reads to block. It got fixed and
#349 solved the problem of 100%CPU. Then the old branch got merged into trunk
and didn't have that kind of fix yet.
I guess it will not happen again.
