I've not read the rest of the message, but I'd like to note that the
previous code is not a *proposal*.  I knew it had drawbacks and was not
clean, but dared to show it make the discussion more concretely.  My
only point I tried to convey in that example is that I wanted to
minimize the place that handles row pointers.  As long as we can make
a compromise on that (even if you don't fully agree with that view),
I'm fine with any solution that meets the goal.
