Asking the sponsors (or users in general) would certainly help (I know
Shane is in this list:-). But, considering the nature of the current
sponsors, I suspect the acceptable frequency and volume of updates are
quite low for them in this context. As you mentioned, "once a minute"
would be considered not so frequent in this context, and as long as
the updator can prepare the new image within that period, we'll be
okay with "replacing the entire zone" approach (where synchronization
is quite simple and cheap).
I'm more concerned about a server that accepts "real" dynamic updates,
meaning updates from a massive number of different clients at a quite
high rate. I heard there's such use case for a big service provider,
and I'm afraid we cannot be sure what such users want by asking the
current sponsors.
