addendum; Apparently, on this specific python, it borks with a UTF-8
error when the PYTHONPATH environment is too long (regardless of what is
actually in the variable), and python is run without an absolute path
(i.e. 'python3.1' instead of '/somedir/bin/python3.1'). I am not sure
whether this is a known and/or fixed bug, or whether it happens on other
systems too. But if you see

UnicodeEncodeError: 'utf-8' codec can't encode character '\udd0b' in
position 12: surrogates not allowed

At least you may have an idea how to work around the problem
