Some random thoughts:

- I think we should still test the lower level behaviors for all
  supported platforms (no compromise, but when to do it can change
  depending on schedule requirements)
- BIND 9 has code of interface detection for a variety of systems.  We
  may want to check it or even port it.
- In general I think we should separate such low level, non portable
  behaviors from our main code (like protocol handling) with some
  decent abstraction.  Hopefully that will help reduce efforts in
  testing the lower levels.
