So is this all about in-source cases?  If so, I'd say any easy
workaround is okay because that mode is basically for
development/debugging purposes.  Maybe it's sufficient to use some
helper script doing naive file search.  I'm very not sure what are
out-of-tree modules, but I guess we can deal with them by adding some
options (maybe ad hoc ones) to the helper script.
