#2641 is not going to be ready soon. The reviewer has asked for
additional tests to be written as part of the bug. These will again have
to be reviewed and re-reviewed (going by previous tickets). I don't
think it's going to be ready for the RC.

#2281 is ready for merge, but I don't know if we want it in the 1.0.0
release. Once merged, there is a small chance it may break on some
platforms (as the .so does not link directly against the in-mem data
source library - see the ticket). If it does, it will need additional
work. This merge cuts down on the release source code size (and compiled
binary size), but apart from some very minor static zone validation
benefits, there isn't any user-noticable change.

#2678 was meant to be obsoleted by #2641, but if #2641 is judged not
ready due to the tests (please see the ticket), then this ticket will
have to be fixed separately.
