By definition most things can be avoided upstream... as long as
you know what the problems are downstream; after all you are
protecting downstream from harming itself. But what's the point?
Use a more robust database. Coming from a T-SQL world (sybase,
mssql) I was unpleasantly suprised by the lack of functionality
of mysql, last time I tried to use it.
