This (and same failures on other boxes) should be able to be fixed by
this patch: http://pastebin.com/a56QW6VL
If someone can review it quickly that would be appreciated, but I'll
commit it not waiting too long.  I've confirmed it fixed the problem,
and the diff is pretty small and simple.
