 I had this problem in the trac327 branch.

 When I set start_recurse to true, the previous setting of start_auth false
 is lost. Or vice versa: if I commit a start_auth setting, my existing
 start_recurse setting is lost.

 My workaround is to set both at same time and commit at same time to keep
 them.
