Comment:

 Ok, I think this is ready for review.

 One note; there is one possible efficiency improvement; for almost all
 calls this code needs to get type objects (for checking arguments).
 Perhaps it is more efficient to get these once on import. But I don't
 think such an improvement (if it helps at all) has a high priority.
