 If you like you can start this task based on the latest version of
 the trac871 branch at the risk of seeing API change through the review
 process.  Feature-wise, it should contain everything this task needs.
 Or perhaps better, you might want to review trac871 while working on
 this branch.

 Note also that Jeremy requested review for #872 as a loose
 prerequisite of this task.
