 Branch trac964 is ready for review.

 The first two commit are not directly related to the main subject of
 the problem, but was introduced to test and fix the case more easily.
 The second one may be the most non trivial change in the branch; I
 intended to make it not to break the externally observable behavior,
 but I hope the reviewer can check that, too.

 The main test and fix themselves should be mostly trivial.
