 => this is why I consolidated all the corresponding branches into trac826

 => IMHO bugs should be fixed even they are discovered on an unsupported
 platform. After we have things which clearly have a general benefit
 (isspace() example) and things which are specific to a platform (should be
 protected by an #ifdef)
