 As discussed in the 2011-05-03 [wiki:SprintPlanning20110503 sprint
 planning meeting], this task involves generalising the logging
 implementation so that it can be easily adapted to different logging back-
 ends. (This may include adding the ability for the logging back-end to be
 selected during configuration.)
