 Hmm, yes. Unfortunately there were a few other bugs hidden by this
 'feature'.

 I just pushed two small changes to fix that; one was a check for False
 instead of None, and the other one was that it failed if the config
 included a version.

 There is a third problem btw, which was kind of already present, and that
 is the upgrade path (we tend to change configuration layout and i don't
 see this not happening in the near future, at which point the 'old' config
 will also be bad and rejected and we get restart loops. But IMO it's
 better to have this explicitely than what happens in current master, and
 fixing that is a separate issue which needs a proposal.

 If you don't mind my two changes I think this can be merged
