 Reviewed commit 6c53fd185f27145746e2ffdd596cfbe482919188

 Appears to compile on Solaris and run correctly.  (Admittedly it does give
 a link warning, but that is nothing to do with the code - it is related to
 the issues reported in #1161.)  It also appears to build under clang.

 Should be OK to have another try at merging.
