Comment:

 Ready for review.

 Note that this does not address the issues in #932, #933, #934 and #935
 directly, though some of them may be partly solved by this, and either way
 they should be a lot less work now.

 The changes look big, but I didn't really change much code, just added a
 few conversion functions, and for the rest it is only moving around of
 stuff (and perhaps adding or removing a few include statements as
 necessary).
