As we want to get rid of separate implementations of python and C++
 libraries
for this communication, we need to implement the wrapper of the C++ code.
 The
interface should be similar to the current python one, to minimize the
 amount
of porting of modules to the new interface.

It should include new methods from #1914, #1915 and #1916. This ticket
 should
either wait for them to finish or it can be split into two parts, one of
 which
is implemented beforehead to allow more parallelism.
