 This looks like auth should be able to respond to both these commands ‒
 which would imply it needs to hold the complete statistics in memory, even
 if there are many zones that do not change often. But that wouldn't be
 what we wanted AFAIK. I think auth should answer only to the diff version,
 so after in answers, it can wipe the counters completely.
