 trac1585 is ready for review.

 I've first merged trac1583, mainly for reducing possible conflicts
 at merge time.  The only real diff is the latest commit (d20fafd) as
 of this writing.

 Functionality wise this branch doesn't depend on trac1583, so it could
 be reviewed in parallel with 1583.
