Comment (by jelte):

 apart from doing the pkgconfig check earlier in configure, would it
 perhaps be a good idea to stop 'guessing' if that config script exist and
 what name it has, and replace '--with-botan' by '--with-botan-config=' to
 which the argument would be the actual botan-config-X.XX script?
