 I propose the extension to `LabelSequence` described in #2148
 for the purpose of this ticket.  If we agree on the approach, we can
 start #2148 as a prerequisite for this task right now (so I
 tentatively pushed it to the current sprint, especially in case we
 need more open tickets - we can remove it if it's controversial).
