 i think separate counts would be easiest to achieve ('for now'), then an
 accumulator could be a separate task (stats show output is already getting
 quite big).

 But TBH, I never really understood why statistics are not cumulative in
 the first place (though to get that right, we probably need another
 addition 'count_type': [cumulative|write-once|overwrite] or something)
