 I'm (still) not sure about the lettuce failure, but this one is a
 regression of this ticket:

 I've fixed it in c0eb910.

 This code was lost in 699068.  kevin: next time you need to cancel
 previously commit code, especially when it was an entire commit (not
 part of it) or a set of entire commits, please use git revert.  That
 will prevent this type of human error.
