 I've completed a first part of this task and pushed it as trac1458.
 Please review it.

 I'm working on the rest of the task, but I think it makes more sense
 to get this part reviewed separately, because these two sets are
 mostly independent, and the first part is already quite big.

 I believe the implementation is pretty straightforward.

 One note: this branch is based on a snapshot of trac1512 (already
 merged).  The first commit is the merge (7d9bb09), which should be
 ignored in review.
