Comment:

 Ready for review.

 Note: I wasn't really sure whether we want or need to support octal
 representations, so I wrote it so that the state class could in theory
 handle it (but uses base 10 only now). Things that turn out not to look
 like an unsigned integer end up being interpreted as strings.
