Comment (by muks):

 I checked BSDs during the review and they seemed to have the long variant
 (though I remember it being just a GNU thing at one time in the past). I
 just checked support in Solaris and Mac OS (just web search) and they also
 seem to have it. So unless our builders are failing (and they're not too
 old), we may be able to keep the code.
