 trac2371 is (mostly) ready for review.

 To be really completed it will need full features of #2369.  I
 specifically plan to add a test case for opening a non existing
 (and/or unreadable) master file.  But, otherwise the implementation
 is complete, and I believe it should be reasonably reviewable
 (if someone is looking for a new review task).
