Comment (by jreed):
Our ext/asio/asio contains files not in official asio 1.4.8 release:
asio/detail/gcc_fenced_block.hpp
asio/detail/null_buffers_op.hpp
asio/detail/service_base.hpp
asio/detail/service_id.hpp
asio/detail/win_signal_blocker.hpp
asio/impl/read.ipp
asio/impl/read_at.ipp
asio/impl/read_until.ipp
asio/impl/write.ipp
asio/impl/write_at.ipp
These look like some came from boost and from some old or development
release of asio.
Also our asio has some patches not in asio-1.4.8. I updated the
ext/asio/README to list some more.
We may need to require development version of Asio on some platforms (even
though not in package repos).
Another alternative is try to get the boost/asio headers to work since we
already have them available. I opened a new ticket for that: #3142
