 You'll also need 0735f72 (which was my original concern).  I'm not
 really comfortable with making these changes without protecting them
 by tests (the fact that it's currently tested only very poorly
 shouldn't be an excuse to make further changes without tests), but in
 this specific case I wouldn't object too strong.

 So, with the above change I think it can be merged.
