Comment:

 trac2437 is ready for review.

 This depends on #2438, which is not yet even in review (awaiting
 another ticket, #2435), but trac2437 only needs part of #2438, and I
 believe the interface won't change (much) at the completion of these
 tickets.  So I think it's safe to review this branch separately.

 There are some tricky parts, but overall the implementation should be
 straightforward.

 As mentioned in #2433, I plan to skip adding a changelog for this
 specific change.
