 I believe I figured out the reason.  If my guess is correct, it's
 primarily because of #2903, but it has actually revealed a more
 fundamental issue that's been existing even before that change.

 Anyway, could you try the attached patch (forgetting the previous
 one)?  If my theory is correct, this should solve this particular
 crash, also (to some extent) addressing the "fundamental" issue.
