 Thanks for the updated patch. I have committed your changes to trac2592
 and fixed minor outstanding details (first and second issues from
 comment:11).

 All tmark's comment has been addressed in my opinion and I believe the
 code is ready for merge.

 I'll reassign it to tmark to confirm it.
