 I don't know if I understand autotools correctly, but given the fact that
 it lacks any kind of support for inter-directory dependencies, I don't
 think there's any correct way to handle this. We could probably come up
 with some dirty workaround, but it could cause more problems later than
 solve.

 I think we should not try such workarounds here.
